For those interested in helping children to learn to read with phonics, the most recent research in this area has led to the following guidelines being put forward.

Before any program of phonics work is published it should be checked to ensure that the following criteria are met: Presentation of high quality systematic phonics program should be the chief element used to decipher the printed word. The primary aims for the average child is that by age 5 they have gained sufficient phonics skills to enable them to then, by age 10, be fluent readers. The program needs to be based on the provision of daily separate lessons designed to stimulate progress form simpler through to more complex phonics skill acquisition. That the program includes regular progress assessment. The system needs to be based on multi-sensory methodology that includes sights, sounds and movement. The program needs to teach how words can be broken down into sounds and then written down and how sounds can be blended to form words. The program should teach children to use phonics as the main tool for reading even in cases where the word is not ‘phonically regular’. That common words that do not conform to regular phonics rules be taught to children. That children at the outset are given texts to read where although most of the words can be decoded using their phonics skills, there may be some words that they still need help to read

1. Phonic work is best understood as a body of knowledge and skills about how the alphabet works, rather than one of a range of optional ‘methods’ or ’strategies’ for teaching children how to read. For example, phonic program should not encourage children to guess words from non-phonic clues such as pictures before applying phonic knowledge and skills. High quality phonic work will make sure that children learn several things. Grapheme/phoneme (letter/ sound) correspondences ( the alphabetic principle) in a clearly defined, incremental sequence; To apply the highly important skill of blending (synthesising) phonemes, in order, all through a word to read it; To apply the skills of segmenting words into their constituent phonemes to spell; Blending and segmenting are reversible processes.

2. Teachers will make principled, professional judgments about when to start on a systematic program of phonic work but it is reasonable to expect that the great majority of children will be capable of, and benefit from doing so by the age of five. It is equally important for the program to be designed so that children become fluent readers having secured word recognition skills by the end of key stage one.

3. The phonics program should at first introduce children to some vowels and consonants that will enable them to read simple words.

4. If the program is high quality, incremental and systematic it will, by design, map progression in phonic knowledge and skills. It should therefore enable teachers to: track children’s progress; assess for further learning and identify incipient difficulties, so that appropriate support can be provided.

5. Teaching elements that use other senses (sound, sight and movement) need to be fun and interesting and targeted at teaching a specific phonics skill. It is important to avoid activities that are too complex or involved or that are not directed at achieving a specific phonics learning goal. If this is not the case the result is that the child will normally lose interest and learning objectives will not be achieved.

Go ahead and look at Angela Kind’s website now where you will find the best way to provide reading help for kids. There’s no obligation but this really is the best product to help your children learn to read with phonics

All parents have concerns at some point about their childrens development and want to do their utmost to provide support for their children, including looking after their housing and nutritional needs as well as their educational development needs. More and more families are discovering that when it comes to reading and finding reading help for kids, the most effective way is for them to learn to read with phonics.

If the pronunciation of a word relies on a teachers abilities alone, if the teacher does not pronounce words correctly this will be passed on to the child. Nobody wants to know that a child feels they are failing because they are unable to pronounce words correctly. This need not happen because today there are many good quality phonics teaching programs on the market that often include audio and video components and this has been proven to achieve excellent results in reading improvement. The goal is for children to be able to read whole words and sentences without help and to be able to use the alphabet properly.

There are those who see phonics as being a direct competition to more traditional language teaching methods; famously in 1984, the United States government conducted research into the phonics teaching system, the outcome of this research was that using phonics improved the ability of children to decode and recognise words. Relating sounds with alphabets helped children increase their alphabet and word identification abilities, and it also helped improve the blending of sounds together to make words. Following the results of this research, English language teaching methods underwent a complete change in the United States and more and more schools began to adopt the phonics method of teaching.

There is more than one-way to teach phonics: synthetic or analytical phonics. The synthetic phonics method teaches children to spell a sound and then merge the sounds to form the word. The analytical phonics system on the other hand uses the association between letters in a word and their grouped sound; for example in the word forest is split in the sounds “for” and “est” and these are combined to produce the word.

Whether you choose to purchase a phonics program form a shop or from the internet, many parents have now decided that this is the best option for their children. And it need not end when the child has made progress- phonics programs can be used throughout life. Some adults have befitted greatly form using phonics to help them pronounce words too.

If we can make learning fun then we have a much better chance of getting the results we want. A child need to be stimulated and keeping them interested is the key, therefore you need to choose a good phonics program that includes fun activities such as cartoons, drawing and playing games.

There is now an extensive variety of phonics programs available for children on the internet. The best advice is for parents who want to get reading help for kids is to view demonstrations of the various programs on offer and then make a decision as to which one is the most suitable for their child. Teaching children new sounds and associating those sounds with pictures can help a child to learn faster and maintain their interest in learning to read with phonics.

If a survey by the National Center For Education Statistics is to be believed, almost 1.1 million children took home schooling in 2005 alone. That’s a great deal of children. Once upon a time, homeschooling used to be a radical statement – something like a declaration of independence.

It was the conservative Christians who advocated homeschooling in the 1980’s and legalized it in every State. But nowadays the average homeschooling pupil is not religiously motivated.

Later surveys indicate that parents are quite fed up with the public school system where much of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the damaging environment in school, ranging from drugs and abuse to negative pressure from their peers.

As a result, we have a surprising mixture of people who form the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their chief aim is providing meaningful and productive education through a method that strengthens the bond between all the members of the family.

These families all have one major thing in common – a long enduring commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children of these families are accorded a primary position. Many believe, and, I think, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their kids in a more natural and nurturing environment.

Public schools can make a child nervous, subservient and downright mean. Children who get their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they reach an age where they can withstand them.

Home-schooling draws the whole family into the almost religious task of teaching. Everyone has a role to play. Both the parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an learning experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going into their child’s head.

Parents also have a greater control over the type of religious and moral values that the child is learning. Even watching a movie together can become an educational experience. Trips to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational experiences as well as recreational ones.

A home-schooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that quite often outgoings have to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is necessary. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody becomes involved in the process of saving money.

Just having a parent at home to look after, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even the husband chips in and there is just no room for boredom.

All right, problems do occur, and there will be many misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your kids can always count on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a richly rewarding experience.

by Marion Jones

In the last decade, home schooling has become very popular especially among the middle and upper-middle class families. There have been many arguments before about home schooling. Experts claim that there are pros and cons in home schooling but it seems that the former outweigh the latter and so, a lot of families are now selecting home schooling over the traditional schools.

Cultures vary and somehow the relations within the family are affected too. In some cultures, family ties are fairly strong, but there are also those who don’t have very good relationships with other family members. However, through home schooling, family ties and relationships are improved. Parents will spend more time with their children because of the home schooling program and the children will have to listen to their parents as well. Communication is much improved and both parties will learn about the importance of speaking and listening.

Many families prefer home schooling because of its flexibility. Since the cost of home education is a bit more than traditional schools, the financial position of the family is very important. However, without thinking about the financial factor, many parents will still go for home schooling, because it can ensure their kids’ safety. Public schools often have dangerous environments that can affect children enormously, but if they are in a home schooling program, they can stay away from these predicaments and their parents will be there to supervise them.

Instead of placing the kids at a public school, many parents would prefer home schooling because the learning environment in public schools is not that conducive. In public schools, very young pupils may experience problems that can affect them socially, mentally, and academically for a long time. Experts who have conducted studies, claim that children learn better in a good environment surrounded by loved ones. Another advantage of home schooling is that children can learn according to their capacity. You can’t just deliver a new lesson, if the previous one hasn’t been learned yet. It may take longer, but the results are better.

As mentioned earlier, home schooling is a bit more expensive. If you think that you might be able to cut down the educational expenses of your child, you’re wrong. Home schooling expenses are almost the same as those of traditional schools. However, if you join in the forums of the parents of home-schoolers, you will discover that there are ways to cut down costs. Naturally, you will have to spend on the resource materials, computer, and internet, but you can also use outside resources like cultural events, public libraries and lots of others.

You will get even more cost-cutting ideas, if you contact other parents. The Internet provides endless possibilities and with a bit of homework, you can definitely discover ways to ease the costs. If you don’t want to pay for teachers, then you will have to learn the lessons as well, however, you have already learned the various subjects in your kids’ educational program, so you only need to review them. You can get further learning material online or the bookshop and later on, educate your kids.

Therefore, it is plain to see, that home schooling is far and away the best option, particularly if your child is still quite young. So, it all depends on you and your kid, whether they continue this form of schooling until they graduate for college.

According to the National Center For Education Statistics, roughly 1.1 million children underwent home schooling in 2005 alone. That’s a lot of children. Once upon a time, homeschooling used to be an extreme statement – something like a declaration of independence.

It was the right-wing Christians who advocated homeschooling in the ’80s and legalized it in every State. But the typical homeschooler of today is not religiously motivated.

More recent surveys show that parents are really fed up with the public school system where much of the learning is superficial and compulsory. They are also concerned about the damaging environment in school, which ranges from drugs and abuse to negative pressure from their peers.

As a result, we have a surprising mixture of people who make up the homeschooling world of today. They cut across all religious creeds and all regional borders. Their main aim is providing meaningful and productive learning through a means that strengthens the bond between all the members of the family.

All these families have one main thing in common – a long enduring commitment to the sanctity of childhood. The children in these families are accorded a primary position. Many believe, and, I think, rightly so, that home schooling allows parents to bring up their kids in a more natural and nurturing environment.

Public schools can make a child nervous, diffident and downright mean. Children who get their education at home are protected from these damaging, negative influences until they reach an age where they can deal with them.

Home-schooling draws the whole family into the quasi religious task of teaching. Everyone is put to work. Both the parents together form a bond with the children. Any experience can be turned into an learning experience. Both the parents are aware of exactly what is going into their child’s education.

Parents also have a greater control over the kind of religious and moral values that the child is taught. Even watching a movie together can become an educational experience. Journeys to the libraries, zoos, museums and other places become educational experiences as well as recreational ones.

A home-schooling family is primarily dependent on the income of one earning member. That means that quite often spending has to be curtailed and proper planning of expenditure is a must. This helps to bring the family members together and everybody gets involved in the task of saving money.

Just having a parent at home to supervise, to nurture and to care for the children brings with it a lot of love and caring. Even the husband takes part and there is just no room for boredom.

Yes OK, problems still do sometimes occur, and there will be a lot of misgivings in your mind, but when you know that your children can always rely on you, and your kids know it too, then homeschooling becomes a richly rewarding experience.
